A night of cosmic jazz, soul and hip-hop instrumentalism with Josef Leimberg and friends.

Virtuoso trumpeter and composer Josef Leimberg will make his Ford Theatres debut performing music from his recent album, Astral Progressions, a fusion of cosmic jazz with soul, R&B and hip-hop. Josef appeared on Kendrick Lamar's Grammy Award–winning LP To Pimp a Butterfly, and has worked with Snoop Dogg, Erykah Badu, Funkadelic, Thundercat and Dr. Dre, among others.  For his Ford performance, he will bring along some of his favorite musicians and collaborators, including soul songstress Jimetta Rose, to perform his signature style of innovative and expansive jazz.

“On his solo debut, “Astral Progressions,” Leimberg blasts into a decidedly cosmic realm, one that recalls Sun Ra’s transfixing work with the Mini-Moog synthesizer in the 1970s, except channeled through contemporary beat-based Los Angeles and filled with generational vigor. It’s music, thick with reverb, echo, layers of voices and a free-floating spirit that celebrates sonic spontaneity. Leimberg mixes these elements into compositions that suggest smoky cocktail jazz of the 1960s or the opening theme to a movie about a Leimert Park love affair.”—Randall Roberts, LA Times

GIVE THE GIFT OF MUSIC + DONATE A TICKET FOR SOMEONE WHO CAN'T AFFORD IT

We need the generous support of individuals, community partners and businesses to reach our goals. We'll give tickets to undeserved youth transforming their lives after experiences in the (broken) juvenile system, young veterans and newly-settled refugee families. $25 pays for 1 ticket to be donated to underserved communities in Los Angeles.

Last summer’s 2016 Common Culture show at the Ford created nearly 100 jobs. Our staff, production team and cast included young military veterans, single moms, recent college grads, a diverse range of percussionists, dancers, singers and musicians and two legendary seniors that have dedicated their lives to the arts.

IN THE AUDIENCE:

Last summer, we offered 60 tickets and bus transportation to New Earth Life. They provide a myriad of services to underserved youth age 16-24 transforming their lives after experiences in the (broken) juvenile system. Help us break the real and perceived barriers to art and music experiences.
